Discover:Online Interactive Tour of the National Theatre

Year:
2009
Institution:
National Theatre
Designer:
In-house original concept, project management and filmmaking; MadeUp Media Flash interface design and programming; Tincan CMS
Why:

The online tour of the National Theatre takes the iconic architecture of Denys Lasdun's building and uses it to showcase the skills of the hundreds of people who work here. Almost 200 short films about all aspects of theatre (from directing to lighting to wig-making) can be accessed in a non-linear fashion by using the interactive 3D floor plan to visit the different rooms around the building. Those who prefer a linear viewing experience can take guided tours with Director Nicholas Hytner or actors Simon Russell Beale and Hayley Atwell - these linear experiences contain numerous links which link off from the guided tour to individual rooms. <!--break-->The experience is designed to be attractive to everyone from drama students in high school to interested audience members, and the journey of discovery encouraged by the site architecture leads to long dwell times within the experience.
