Why

The Close Ups project, funded by the Getty Foundation and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, gives visitors access to a variety of information about 100 works of art in the Seattle Art Museum’s permanent collection. Close Ups online offers informative text, supplementary images, audio and video through an engaging, user-friendly presentation. Our project is unique in that all content is driven through our collection management database (TMS) and delivered through a completely customized eMuseum interface. The finished project represents an extensive collaboration between SAM’s Curatorial, Education, and New Media divisions. Along with exploring museum-produced content, visitors are also able to create and save their own groupings of works of art in the “My SAM Collection” feature, where they are able to add commentary and email their completed collections to others. The procedures and integration system developed for Close Ups will be used as a framework within which to develop and add in-depth content for even more works of art in SAM’s permanent collection.
