The Department of Museums and Collections Services, an innovative academic support unit at the University of Alberta, seeks a Web Application Developer.
Reporting to the Manager, Collections/Digitization Program, the Web Applications Developer is an integral part of the collections management digitization team that provides development and support for the University of Alberta Museums' information technology initiatives. The Web Applications Developer is responsible for the development and maintenance of custom applications to deliver interactive tools and applications; maintenance and support of department web sites; and design and development of Oracle and MSSQL databases. The Web Applications Developer also provides Internet applications development services to other departments in Learning Systems Enterprises (LSE Group).

Duties

  • Develops and maintains searchable web interfaces, web portals and custom applications for the University of Alberta Museums' collections databases
  • Monitors and supports the University of Alberta Museums' web site and the LSE web environment
  • Develops and supports custom scripts to automate certain functions of the digital collections management process
  • Creates and maintains databases
  • Ensures that all completed projects are world-wide web standards compliant
  • Maintains other departmental custom web applications as required
  • Collects and monitors web stats
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • BSc in Computing Sciences or equivalent, combined with advanced web programming and application development
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in application development and database design
  • Excellent working knowledge of ASP.NET, VB.NET, PHP, JavaScript
  • Excellent working knowledge of web accessibility and usability standards
  • Excellent working knowledge of SQL, Oracle 8i or higher, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and higher, and Microsoft Access
  • Knowledge of HTTP protocol and experience with XML
  • Experience with SQL Plus, Visual Studio.NET and SQL Enterprise Manager developer tools
  • Knowledge and experience with Flash, Adobe Photoshop, C#, AJAX and Java would be an asset
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational and time management skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to client services, and a professional and positive approach
  • Ability to work in a team environment and effectively communicate with others
  • Knowledge of museum information management needs
