We're delighted that Michael Geist will be opening Museums and the Web 2008. A leading Canadian Internet theorist and advocate, Michael will challenge our pre-conceptions about how institutions should act in an inter-connected world.

Michael Geist, University of Ottawa, Canada
While many Internet advocates have long supported a hands-off government and policy approach to the Internet, Michael will make the case for a hands-on approach, citing the role that the museum and archival communities should play in contentious issues such as digital copyright, network neutrality, and access to public domain works.
Join us in Montréal for a great kick-off to the twelfth Museums and the Web. The discussions @ MW often make me think twice about things I thought I understood.
An Excellent Opener...
Michael Geist was succinct, humourous, kept a great pace throughout his presentation and he geared everyone up and made us all excited to dig in to the conference.
I appreciated his "here's what we're doing at home" inclusion of Canadian politics and examples that showcased practical advocacy and action in response to net issues.
Excellent talk
I am very grateful to have Michael speaking out on these issues. There's a large, but often scattered, community of folks who understand the importance of issues of net neutrality, etc. But Michael has been hugely important in presenting these ideas in a succinct fashion. Excellent choice.
I hope the audience was able to soak up a bit of his thinking and relate it back to what they are doing.
here he is ... doing the presentation
