job: Front-End Web Developer at National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

With over 500,000 pages and 30,000 illustrated collection records online, the museum’s website is a rich resource for all. Our challenge is to craft a more participatory and engaging experience and to meet visitor expectations for an on-demand museum.

At the highest level, the Museum has committed to a forward-thinking digital strategy. These plans include a landmark project to unlock the Museum’s pre-eminent paper-based collections (manuscripts, prints and drawings, ship plans, charts), creating a digital archive and state-of-the-art learning facilities for people to explore and research.

The chosen candidate will work closely with the multidisciplinary team within Digital Media and liaise with staff in all departments across the museum.

Reporting to: Senior Developer or Head of Digital Media

Key responsibilities:

* To advise on technical aspects of digital media projects, to ensure that all technical possibilities, problems and limitations are explored and that projects achieve the intended look, feel and functionality
* To work alongside designers and other developers in devising new functionality and formats, including customisation of the Museum’s content management system, Amaxus
* To create websites, templates and other interactive elements using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XSL and other technologies
* To develop, test, release and document using best software engineering practices to ensure ease of maintenance. To keep technical documentation up-to-date (e.g. latest versions of key procedures, file paths, passwords, etc)
* Accurately estimate projects and then deliver according to the agreed timescales
* To stay abreast of developments in web technologies and techniques and report on their suitability for use within the NMM websites

Qualifications and experience:

Essential

* Demonstrable experience of developing websites and other interactive elements using standards-compliant HTML, CSS and JavaScript, including cross browser implementation and accessibility issues
* Understanding of good software engineering principles, including version control, QA testing, documentation and release processes. In particular, experience of supporting and developing existing systems and code bases developed by teams other than your own
* Experience of user-centred design
* Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, in a creative environment
* Ability to communicate effectively at all levels, making allowances for different levels of technical understanding

Desirable

* Wire framing and storyboarding
* Advanced knowledge of XSL
* Working with Content Management Systems
* Experience of object-oriented programming in PHP or Coldfusion.

Terms and conditions:
The post holder will work a 41 hour week, core hours Monday to Friday 09.00–17.00 with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management.

Salary: £23,000–£30,000 per annum
