ICHIM07 is dedicated to the memory of Xavier Perrot, our partner and friend, who attended every ICHIM conference and co-chaired the meetings in 2003 (Paris), 2004 (Berlin) and 2005 (Paris) before his untimely death from cancer on July 20, 2007.

His convivial and inquisitive spirit continues to inspire us all.

Salutations from San Francisco à tous les ICHIMiens

and to all those who celebrate the life and mourn the death of Xavier Perrot! There are so many great quotes in the blog above... it's clear X. was able to establish une complicité, as they say in French: a mischievous, co-conspiratorial attitude that said "We're going to bypass all that officious nonsense and do something REALLY creative--even if we have to wing it!" (Especially if we have to wing it! ;-) As a result, he was spontaneous and open to the finer things of life: camaraderie, imagination, music, food, shared experience, collaboration. What a treat to have had him as a pal. We've all shared in that unique life pleasure.

Hugs to all those back there in Toronto including, of course, Sophie. Désolé I can't be there with you. I know Xavier would be delighted and honored that Ranjit will close the conference held in his honor. Ranjit, will you play?

Best,
Peter

what a joyful presence you were

I'm completely stunned to hear of Xavier's passing... Xavier, your energy was incredible and he were a joy to be near. Your laughter was contagious. I will never forget my stays in Paris with you, Sophie and Lucinae. One friend of mine, who met you only briefly, named his first-born son after you. You were truly inspirational. I consider you a dear, dear, and trusted friend and i will miss you very much. You will be remembered.

The ICHIM family

I was lucky enough to be invited to work with Xavier on the English editions for the ICHIM conferences on the abstracts and websites in Berlin 2003 and Paris 2005 but I met Xavier in Boston 2002 at M&W conference.

Xavier had a team of young people working with him - the ICHIM team which he grew to call his ICHIM family - of which I feel honoured to be included. We worked with him and awaited for him and instant messaged him and each other on AOL messenger. I was working through the night (because of the time difference) on abstracts even on the beach in Penang because I had booked the summer holiday before I knew I would be working for the ICHIM conference.

I cannot begin to tell of my sadness and sense of loss when I realised that Xavier will never be there again when I switch on my AOL messenger. We had only corresponded a couple of weeks before that. I am sure that many people knew Xavier much better than I did but he had this ability of friendship, this hospitality and warmth that is rare, which is especially his.

Xavier had also a great sense of humour and we shared many a joke about our English speaking colleagues, the differences between the French and the Americans or the British and yet we know he was truly international in his outlook on culture and heritage. He was so proud of his visit to China. He got all the different translations for the ICHIM conference website in readiness for ICHIM Paris 2005.

Xavier, you will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with your family.

Salut Xavier !

what an angel!

Xavier was a rare combination of virtues. In him a marvelously insightful and tough intelligence came together with a moral and social sensitivity of the highest wattage. I have rarely met someone so smart who was also so good: absolutely honest, loyal, compassionate. How unbearable that the truly good should be the ones who suffer and who leave us far too early. I last saw Xavier in San Francisco and we planned on his returning soon to the Bay Area for a series of meetings. I looked forward to this so much, and could not understand why he did not show up; that is until I learned of the cruelly unjust disease that had caught him out. I still regret that missed meeting. My heart goes out to his lovely family.

My condolences

Dear ICHIM Organizers: Throughout my sporadic involvements with the ICHIM conferences, I had an opportunity to interact with him and he was always a kind, sympathetic and happy spirit. It is a loss for the entire community. Warm regards, Lily Díaz Media Lab Helsinki

Xavier

Like many other fellow scholars and practitioners around the world, everyone here in the Department of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester were stunned and saddened to hear of the passing away of Xavier Perrot. He will be deeply missed by all of us that had the benefit of meeting and working with him. Comfortingly, my last contact with Xavier was with him and other friends over a glass (and by that, I really mean a bottle!) at a conference on the Island of Lesvos. We settled down in a corner of a very large terrace at the University overlooking the Aegean at sunset, and Xavier essentially held court for a couple of hours, with a large number of postgrads hanging on his every word. What still makes me smile is the warmth and charm with which he politely demonstrated how there was different ways of thinking about everything I thought I knew. A wonderful scene by which to remember him.
