Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 hands-on impressions

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 12:15

We managed to get some nice hands-on time with the Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 while chilling out in Hong Kong, and we're glad to say that up close this all-in-one desktop wasn't too far off the renderings we saw in October. Fans of Transformers might dig those angular corners and brushed metal effect, but we lack the expertise to tell if it'd be an Autobot or a Decepticon. Actually, we do, but we're far too humble to say it out loud. Click on if you're digging a deeper look.

What Type of Museum Advocate are YOU?

Museum Audience Insight [Reach Advisors] - Mon, 2010-01-04 11:50

It’s the first Monday after New Year’s.  And we saw all those Facebook posts this morning about heading back to the office, back to the regular workweek.

To help ease you back into your normal routine, we came up with a little bit of fun.

Among museum professionals, there appear to be four types of Museum Advocates.  So we developed a short quiz to help you find out what type you are.  Even better, we’ll analyze the results and share them with the field in a few weeks (and disclose what types we are as well).

And best of all?  We designed some nifty prizes that we will randomly award to respondents.

So a fun quiz, chance of a fabulous prize.  Are you game?  It takes about three minutes.

To take the quiz, go to:

http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB22A2YE5M69F&MAIB=1

And don’t forget . . . . Wednesday we’ll be announcing our newest research project your museum can participate in.  Look for a blog post and an e-newsletter that morning

Nokia asks ITC to ban iPhone, iPod, and MacBook imports, files another lawsuit against Apple

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 11:49

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Nokia_Wants_to_Ban_iPhone_iPod_and_MacBook_Imports'; Looks like Nokia is going all-out in its patent fight with Apple: in addition to the lawsuit it's filed over GSM standards and last week's International Trade Commission complaint, Espoo just filed a second complaint with the federal court, alleging that Apple's infringing several "implementation patents" that cover everything from camera sensors to touchscreens. That's three fronts in the same war, if you're counting -- the original regarding GSM patents, and these two latest over specific device technologies. The biggest bombshell so far is the ITC complaint, in which Nokia's asking the commission to ban imports of basically every Apple mobile product from the MacBook to the iPhone for infringing its device patents -- a strategy we've seen in other high-profile cases. Since the ITC has the ability to move quite quickly, we'd expect that case to be the primary battleground for the moment -- but remember that Apple has plenty of its own incredibly broad patents of its own to fight back with here, so don't expect a quick resolution. Looks like 2010 is going to be awfully good for these attorneys, don't you think?

[Thanks, Matt]

MSI planning to a show dual-screen e-reader, 3D laptop at CES

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 11:36

We don't have too many details here, but we sure are itching to get to Vegas to see if MSI really does have a dual-screen, Tegra-powered e-reader up its sleeve. Let's have it MSI: are you stealing another page from your Taiwanese arch-nemesis ASUS and its dual-screen Eee Reader? Regardless, Digitimes reports that not only will it show a dual-screen gadget of sorts, but also one with a slate form factor. More believable is the 3D laptop that the Taiwanese company is said to be prepping. Let's just hope they have gone with NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology there. It's only a matter of hours now until we find out about it all.

Scrybe from Synaptics brings new life to your tired touchpad

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 11:21

Scrybe from Synaptics brings new life to your tired touchpad Did your laptop maker not see fit to include any jazzy gesture support into your touchpad? Did you buy early and miss out on the multitouch revolution? Synaptics wants to fill the gap for those portables (and suitably-equipped desktops) with its Scrybe software. It augments Windows' existing touch functionality to add context-specific gestures and motions, and while jog-dial control for media has us most excited, you'll also be able to edit photos, look up word definitions, and plenty more -- even if you don't have a 10-finger capable device. The plan is for the company to make partnerships with various manufacturers so that this software becomes standard issue stuff, but you can get a taste of it today thanks to a roughly 10MB beta preview downloadable now at the read link. Do let us know what you think.

iPhone and Magic Mouse linked up by BTstack (video)

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 11:14

Even though you probably still can't figure out what good the ability to connect your Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone will do, the BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connected Magic Mouse twirling its pointer all over Apple's handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn't be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break.

[Thanks, Daniel]

Featured Manuscript Collection: January/February

Edna A. Miller Collection
MSS 02-05

Finding Aid
Edna A. Miller served as secretary to Ray Johnston, director of the Rohwer Relocation Center in Desha County, Arkansas, from 1942 to 1945. This small, but rich Butler Center collection includes materials collected during her time at the Relocation Center, as well as class material from her time as a college student. Of particular interest is wartime writing and evaluation by the War Relocation Authority itself on the relocation process, a Red Cross Yearbook from the camp that includes artwork by Henry Sugimoto, and copies of camp newspapers. Also included are a number of photographs taken by internees or camp staff. Miller's academic papers included in the collection are based on her experience in working with the internees.

Sergeant Joseph (MP) and Sergeant David Hirahara with a Small Girl, Undated. 5 x 3 Black and White. Taken by a Military Policeman.
Location in Collection: Box 3, Item 33.

The cover of Red Cross, Rohwer Relocation Center Unit, 1945. Published by the Rohwer Red Cross Unit to Commemorate Red Cross Activities at the Center, 1943-1945. Lists Names of Rohwer Men Killed in Battle. Illustrations by Henry Sugimoto.

The following quotes are but two examples of the scope of the writing included in the publications found in this collection, from lighthearted humor to serious reflection.

The first one is from the final edition of the El Joaquin, camp newspaper at the Stockton Assembly Center, first stop for many of the Japanese Americans; the edition was devoted to preparing the evacuees for their transfer to the Relocation Center in Arkansas. Clint A. Branum, chief of the Center's supply section, wrote:
Assuming that Arkansas will be the next stop, I have taken the trouble to look up a few facts concerning the country and am listing them here for the benefit of those interested.

First: As you trains rolls along you can keep watching out the window and when you get to where the cattle are keeping up with the train, you will be in Arkansas. Of course, you can't depend on this because sometimes the trains out-run the cattle on a down grade.

I checked up on the mosquito situation and found some of the rumors to be exaggerated. Only last night I was talking to a Stockton mosquito just returned from a visit down south. He was ashamed to find that his Arkansas cousins are so small that it takes two of them to drag off a horse.

Lloyd "B Ration" Shaffer gave me the low-down on the fishing. According to him, the catfish are so big that everyone carries a saddle horse in their tackle box to land 'em with.

You will find the opossum to be a very useful animal. To cook them, you put them in a pan and cover complete with sweet potatoes. Bake rapidly for two days. Then, throw the opossum away, and if you like burnt sweet potatoes you have a delicious meal. 'Possum grease is a recognized sure-cure remedy for chapped hands, hiccoughs, falling hair, and worn boots.

Seriously speaking, in spite of the numerous gags that have been written about Arkansas, I am sure that you will find it a pleasant place to live, and I wish you all a full share of good luck and happiness.
The second example is much more serious and was written by an internee. The following poem was included in The Pen, the 1943 camp yearbook published by the staff of The Outpost, the Rohwer Relocation Center camp newspaper.

"We are but refugees"

We are but refugees
in the land of the free,
We're not from overseas,
this is our own country.

We were born and bred here,
our parents, Japanese.
Yet, within our nation dear,
we still are refugees.

America, we ask you why,
you leave us high and dry?
America, what is our sin?
On you, our hopes we pin.

Must we beg for liberty:
Must we live in poverty,
Poverty of a sterile life,
Victims of internal strife?
Must we seek another land,
where as free men, we can stand!

Give us your answer, America!
the time for it is now.
Give us the truth, America!
the fate that you endow.

Our loyalty to the nation
cannot be a realization,
Until wrongs are somewhat righted
and rights are reinstated.

Tomorrow may be a little late;
for, time may change our hearts.
Today, we want to know our fate,
before our faith departs.

Don't let color lines be drawn;
for, evil will be the spawn,
and victory fo democracy
will lead to an autocracy. . . .
The rule of class, of wealth and race,
The rule of guns, and bombs and mace;
And endless years of constant wars
And dying men, by countless scores.

Without a single thought of hate,
a hundred thousand strong, we wait,
Waiting for the call to sound
saying -- freedom has won its round.

January 1943

Casio Exilim G EX-G1 hands-on

Engadget.com - Mon, 2010-01-04 10:30

Casio's Exlim G EX-G1 certainly managed to turn a few heads when it was announced back in November, with it introducing a new angular design to complement its status as the "world's thinnest shock-resistant camera." Add to that the promise of being freezeproof, waterproof and dustproof, and you just know this is one we had to check out first hand. As we're happy to report, the $299 Exlim G definitely feels solid and substantial from the moment you pull it from its packaging, although all that shock-proofing and weather-proofing does come with a few minor inconveniences compared to a standard point-and-shoot. The first of those is that the battery compartment requires a special tool and some pretty nimble fingers to open and, secondly, the two extra side protectors that provide even more ruggedness require that you first remove some very tiny screws from the camera and then attach the protector with some slightly longer screws (Casio thankfully provides a few spares). Once you've got things set, however, the camera should easily survive life in a pocket or backpack during even your most arduous travels -- and take some decent pictures and YouTube-ready video, to boot.

Be sure to check out the gallery below for our extensive hands-on look at the camera, and check back later for some sample shots and additional impressions once we've had a chance to really put the Exilim G through its paces.
